(MAN)MADE MARION
Marion Reservoir, Kansas 6,160-acre Marion is a shallow fiat-land reservoir whose deepest spot (the old river channel) reaches 30 feet An 18-inch length limit ensures plenty of catch-and-release action, with numbers of legal fish in the 3-to 6-pound range and a fair chance at a 7 to 9 pounder.
Walleyes inhabit shallow water (1 to4 feet) a good portion of spring and summer. If the walleyes aren’t there, check the 7- to 15-foot range. Due to a lack of structure, walleyes often concentrate on subtle changes in depth. Submerged roadbeds are also good bets.
In early summer, fish shallow main-lake points and large shallow flats just east of French Creek. As summer progresses, explore edges of the old river channel and steeper main-lake points. Standard reservoir tactics such as bottom bouncers and spinners, crankbaits, and jigs all produce. In early summer, fish tend to be scattered, so covering water is often more productive than staying on proven spots; anchoring on a good location and fishing jogs and crawlers, however, at times out produces other methods.
